Custom Shapes on Short Notice
A customer needed custom cookie cutters produced to a specific design for a birthday celebration. The required shapes were not available off the shelf and the timeframe ruled out conventional manufacturing options.
The cutters needed to match a provided reference design while being functional, food-safe, and durable enough to hold their shape through repeated use during the event.
The Challenge
Food-Safe Material and Clean Cutting Edges
Cookie cutters need to be food-safe, structurally rigid enough to press through dough cleanly, and have well-defined cutting edges without rough surfaces or sharp protrusions that could cause injury. Material selection and print settings both required careful consideration to meet these requirements.
The design also needed to accurately represent the reference shapes — freehand interpretation was not acceptable for this application.
The Process
Design from Reference, Verify, Then Produce
The cutter shapes were modelled in CAD from the customer’s reference images, with wall thickness and edge geometry optimised for function rather than just appearance. A single test piece was printed and approved by the customer before the full batch was committed to production.
The material selected was confirmed food-safe for incidental food contact. The print settings were adjusted to produce a smooth, clean edge on the cutting face of each piece.
Outcome
The finished cookie cutters were delivered in time for the event. The customer was able to produce custom baked goods matching the celebration theme, and the cutters held up to repeated use throughout the event without any deformation or edge failure. The turnaround from initial enquiry to delivered batch was under one week.
