Pet Memorial Signage – Pebbles Patch
A hand-drawn memorial sign engraved for aged care residents following the loss of their beloved dog, Pebbles, preserving their own lettering and paw print design as a lasting keepsake for their garden.
Overview
A Personal Tribute in Timber
A memorial sign was requested by residents of an aged care home following the passing of their beloved 15 year old dog, Pebbles. The brief called for a warm, handmade piece that residents could hang and see each day, marking the spot they had come to think of fondly as “Pebbles’ Patch.” Rather than a generic plaque, the sign needed to carry a personal, hand-drawn quality that reflected the affection the residents held for their pet.
The Challenge
Preserving a Hand-Drawn Feel in a Durable Finish
The residents had sketched their own design directly onto the timber, including the lettering and paw print motifs, and wanted that personal, handwritten character retained rather than replaced with a clean, uniform typeface. Translating that hand-drawn layout into an engraving that would hold up outdoors, while still reading as heartfelt and personal rather than mass-produced, required careful attention to line weight and depth. The timber’s natural grain also needed to be worked with, rather than against, so the engraving remained legible without losing the rustic warmth of the material.

The Process
Faithful Engraving, Finished for Outdoor Display
The residents’ original sketch was used as the direct reference for the engraving layout, preserving their hand-drawn lettering style and the placement of the paw prints rather than substituting a standard font. The timber sign was fitted with a jute rope hanger, allowing it to be displayed hanging in the residents’ garden area. The finished piece was inspected to confirm the engraving depth and contrast held up clearly against the natural timber tone before being handed over.
Outcome
The finished sign gave the residents a lasting, personal tribute to Pebbles, one that reflected their own handwriting and design rather than a generic memorial product. The engraving held clean, legible detail despite the natural variation in the timber grain, and the rustic finish suited its outdoor garden setting. The piece was well received as a meaningful keepsake marking a place that held real sentimental value for the residents.
