A mechanic needed a specific bushing for a vehicle repair but could not source the correct component from local suppliers within the required timeframe. The part was on extended back-order, and the vehicle could not remain out of service while waiting.

The mechanic needed a solution that would hold up under real operating conditions — not a temporary fix, but a replacement part that could perform to the original specification.


The Challenge

Material Performance Under Heat and Load

Bushings operate under mechanical stress and elevated temperatures depending on their position in a vehicle. A part that looks correct but fails under operating conditions creates a more serious problem than the original fault. Dimensional accuracy was equally critical — even small tolerances incorrectly applied would prevent correct fitment.

The original part could not be reverse-engineered from a scan due to its worn condition, so accurate measurement and CAD modelling from physical reference was required.


The Process

Measured, Designed, and Printed to Specification

The component was measured precisely from the original using calibrated measurement tools and modelled in CAD. Material selection focused on a high-temperature resistant filament with appropriate compressive strength and dimensional stability for the application.

The part was printed, inspected against the original dimensions, and delivered the same day the enquiry was received. No iteration was required — the first print was correct.

Outcome

The bushing fit correctly and restored the vehicle to service within 24 hours of the initial enquiry. The mechanic avoided days of waiting for a back-ordered part and the customer avoided extended vehicle downtime. The part has performed without issue under normal operating conditions since installation.
